Who We Are?
What is HANAI WORKS
“Hanai,” in its simplest understanding, is a form of adoption between families. However, the Hawaiian term is much more complex than the western understanding of adoption. Its practice has been performed for generations, and dates far before western contact in Hawaii. We won’t dissect the practice of hanai, as we alone, could not convey the gravity that it embodies.
However, the ideology behind hanai is why we have borrowed the term to describe our work. Hanai is an ethos of love and compassion - it emphasizes the importance of family, care, and thoughtfulness.
As we collaborate with clients, we become connected - Our combined efforts are poured into your project, making it worthy of passing along to future generations. Thus, we invest both, our time and skills into something greater than ourselves.
The work we produce with you is built to span lifetimes.

Hanai Works Goals
Create responsible products
We have an obligation to care for the land and people around us. The work we produce should do the same. Responsibly sourced materials and finishes are fundamental to the process.
Family and Community
In addition to our work, a commitment to family and community is a core value of Hanai Works.
We are developing a channel between our local high school and community outreach programs - to inspire young adults to build and teach them basic design and fabrication skills.
This program would provide the youth with access to basic tools, and potentially expand the existing network of afterschool activities/programs.
